T-Mobile is finally getting the iPhone 5— the last major carrier to do so.
The company announced during a press event in New York City on Tuesday the iPhone 5 is finally coming to T-Mobile, for a $99.99 down payment and $20 for each month (for 24 months). Although it will be available without a contract, customers can subscribe to its LTE network.
Meanwhile, the iPhone 4 can be purchased for a down payment of $14.99 and $15 each month for 24 months. Financing is also available.
T-Mobile's iPhone is technically a new model. It has the exact same design, but with additional radios (it connects to T-Mobile's HSPA+ 42 and LTE, both in AWS spectrum). This has been a technical factor holding back the iPhone on T-Mobile. Previously, you could only connect to 2G EDGE on that carrier.
"This is an important day for people who love their iPhone but can’t stand the pain other carriers put them through to own one," said John Legere, president and CEO of T-Mobile USA. "We feel their pain. I've felt the pain. So we’re rewriting the rules of wireless to provide a radically simple, affordable iPhone 5 experience — on an extremely powerful network."
The move is a part of an effort to build its subscriber base.
