Sony Xperia SP and Xperia L Handsets 2013

New devices aimed at upper mid-range market

Sony Xperia SP
Sony has announced two new handsets in the form of the Xperia L and Xperia SP.
Following the release of the flagship Xperia Z, the pair complete a busy few months for Sony, and also mark the first notable venture into other handset markets following the unveiling of the first-class behemoth.
Featuring  a smart-looking aluminium frame, the Xperia SP is the more premium of the two and boasts specs including:
  • 4.6-inch 1280 x 720 pixel resolution display
  • 1.7GHz dual-core processor
  • 8 megapixel camera w. HDR capabilities
  • Sony BRAVIA Engine 2
The new handset also comes complete with a customisable light-strip at the bottom of the frame, which you can see in action here, as well as being 4G-enabled. It is the first official confirmation of the device following a leak late last month.
As the slightly cheaper option, the Xperia L boasts a more moderate collection of specs that will no doubt prove popular in the mid-range market. These include:
  • 4.3-inch 854 x 480 pixel resolution display
  • 1GHz dual-core processor
  • 8 megapixel camera
Amongst the specifications shared by the pair, both will sport NFC capabilities and feature 8GB of internal storage expandable via mircoSD card. The devices will likely put the company back in direct competition with the likes of HTC and Samsung following a tantalising showdown between the HTC One, Sony Xperia Z and as yet unreleased Samsung Galaxy S4.
Sony has confirmed that both handsets will be available in Europe and Asia before the summer, although no further details on specific dates or pricing is yet known.
